Our Activities
We aim to strengthen the “silaturrahim” (kinship) of the kampung
folks and bridging the generation gap. We believe the younger and future generations who are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the kampung folks, and did not have the opportunity of experiencing the unity of the kampung people, will
benefit from the values and traditions that we at Balik Kampung can help to impart.
The following are some of the initiatives that we have rolled out and will be embarking on to achieve our objectives. The success of these initiatives will depend on the support of orang kampung and their children and grandchildren. We therefore welcome suggestions and volunteers for these initiatives to meet our goals.
Events
We endeavour to organize events on regular basis to gather orang kampung that include Hari Raya functions, Gathering of Warga Perintis, Invitations to food presentations initiated by agencies especially if they involve delicacies from our kampung besides others. We have had two big Hari Raya functions at Orchid Country Club that attracted hundreds of orang kampung. Recently, we have also gathered warga perintis for tea at one of their homes. We will endeavour to organize more events for orang kampung kita, inshaAllah.
Cooking Class
A new initiative, we plan to organize cooking classes focusing on the delicacies from our kampung. As of today, April 2020, this initiative is still at its planning stage and we are also looking at premises to conduct these classes. We will announce the agenda once everything falls into place. Please bear with us.
We hope to attract the older folks to participate both as the instructors, or chefs, and as participants. It will be brilliant to see the younger generations attending these classes to learn of the unique foods on offer by orang kampung. We encourage all moms and dads to pull their children along for these classes in the spirit of silaturrahim.
Group Travels
Rombongan Orang Kampung! For those old enough to remember, going for rombongan (group travelling) to Changi beach or Desaru in Johore Bahru were the luxuries back in the day.
We would like to recreate this and let’s go a bit further than Changi Beach shall we? InshaAllah, we will plan to have rombongan and do let us know what your preferences are and the destinations of your choice. Please email us at bkbs@balikkampungbussorah.com or whatsapp Encik Rosman on 9665 6145.
For starters we can plan for makan trips to JB or Malacca including the young and older folks. We also have Turkey, Bhutan, Russia, Spain, Oman... Or Let’s go UMRAH together!!
Publishing of Recipe Book
This is in the pipeline. The focus is to compile as many of the recipes from our kampung digging into the history of its existence and the families who initiated each of the recipe. It will take some time however we will want to achieve this in order to preserve the uniqueness and authenticity of our kampung foods for the future generations. We hope the younger and future generations will become the advocates in preserving our recipes.
